Today we go up-scale. It’s on to Belgravia, the center
of Diplomatic London. Our first stop is Harrod’s. From the moment we enter this
store, we know we are in the land of money. Going from the entry to some place
we can actually afford to buy something, we pass “Luxury” this and “Luxury”
that.

We got a late start this morning, so our first stop is
the Café to have some lunch. But which one? There’s the Champagne Bar, Chai Wu,
the Rotisserie, the Pizzeria, the Steakhouse and maybe 8 more.
We decide on the Café. Amy orders the Chicken Sandwich
on Baguette. I have the Braffle (combination of a brioche and a waffle). Both
are delicious.

We do a little shopping in Harrod’s, then proceed
outside to wander amongst the embassies. This neighborhood is well worth the
visit. The embassies are exceedingly well kept. The area is quiet and immaculate.
It’s a shame that Belgravia Square is private, open only to those who live in
the area. It looks like a lovely respite from the rigors of diplomatic life. I
wonder how many secret meetings and clandestine phone calls are made in the
midst of the park.
That these embassies are in this neighborhood makes
perfect sense. Just to the east is Buckingham Palace. Historically, ambassadors
would meet with the Royal Family there and a location close by was required.
Interestingly, the United States Embassy is north of here in Mayfair, not so close
to the Palace.
We see the embassies of Finland, Spain, Serbia,
Bahrain, Turkey and Luxembourg. We skirt around Wilton Crescent and head north up
Wilton Place, duck into William Mews and end up on Knightsbridge at the Albert
Gate. Here we see the Kuwaiti Embassy just opposite that of the Republic of
France.
We have finished the walk and decide to head back to
the flat to rest up before dinner. We dine at GBK, a nice chain throughout London:
Gourmet Burger Kitchen. The dinner is quite tasty. We head home satisfied.
