May 30: SW Road Trip Day 21: Phoenix Day 2

We wake up in Scottsdale and it is already hot. It is another leisurely morning. We finally make it down to breakfast about 8:30 and enjoy the fare. We decide that today we will visit the Heard Museum, in downtown Phoenix. At about 9:30 we head west and are in the parking lot of the museum by 10:00.

The Mission of the Heard is to be the world's preeminent museum for the presentation, interpretation and advancement of American Indian art, emphasizing its intersection with broader artistic and cultural themes. There are several exhibits of immediate interest to us here today. The first is a presentation of works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Along with their art are photos of them as well as discussion of their passions, relationship and philosophies. It gives a most interesting portrait. Complicated people. I really enjoy looking at their work.

The next exhibit we see is of Oregon artist Rick Bartow. Bartow was a member of the Mad River Band of Wiyot Indians, a small tribe indigenous to Humboldt County of Northern California. His work thus fits neatly into the mission of the museum. Most of his work on display is from the Portland Museum of Art. Bartow was a master of many different mediums. Some of his work is really challenging. Some is just fun. We enjoy it all.

Other items of note here are the many outdoor sculptures, all by Native Artists. Also, there are numerous artifacts of Native Life, including the Katsina Doll collection of Arizona’s Senator Barry Goldwater.

We really enjoy the Heard. Next, we consider lunch. Pizzeria Bianco has been recommended to us so we head over to Heritage Square. We have the Margherita Pizza with mushrooms and olives and share a salad.

Pizzeria Bianco
We would like to explore Heritage Square a little more, but as the song says, it's "...just too darn hot!"

Instead, we address our “To Do” List. At some point in the last 2+ weeks, the case for Amy's iPad was misplaced and left behind. To protect this vital item of electronics, the case must be replaced. We start with a visit to Fry’s in Scottsdale in a shopping center that Wayne saw just off the Interstate. Only when we get there, we find that it is a Fry’s Grocery Store, not an Electronics Store. We consult our iPhones to regroup. We find an Apple Store! It is only about 3.5 miles away! We head over. But when we finally collar a salesperson and ask about our desire for an iPad Air case, we get the reply “Oh, we don’t carry any stock for that old technology, only for the iPad Air 2.” I guess if they can’t have a big mark-up, they can’t waste their shelf space on it. (Oops, I’m getting a little cranky again; must be the heat.) Back to the iPhone: we find a “Best Buy”! (What are we going to do when stores like this disappear in the next year or two?) We drive the mile and half and finally locate it. Not only is it the right case for Amy’s iPad and will protect it well, it folds in a special way that allows it to stand by itself so we can more easily watch shows recorded on our Comcast account. I didn’t think it would take almost 2 hours for this little task.

Next, and last for this foray into commercial Scottsdale, we find a grocery store (Safeway) and buy a salad kit bag. Combined with our leftovers from last night's dinner and today's lunch, we will have a nice dinner in our motel tonight. By the time we get around to it, the outside temperature has cooled to the low 80’s, so we eat our meal on the patio near the swimming pool. It is finally comfortable to be outside!

It was over 100 degrees today. It is supposed to be over 100 degrees again tomorrow. How do people live in this heat? Tomorrow, we leave this area and head up a little into the mountains. It should be a little cooler.
